Insecurity: Ortom laments as economic, academic activities paralyse in Katsina-Ala
Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has revealed that farming, business and academic activities have been paralysed in Katsina-Ala due to the bloodletting in the town.
The state government on Sunday placed the town under a 24-hour curfew following the attacks allegedly carried out by a militia group led by Terwase Akwasa, popularly known as Gana.
Gana has been declared wanted since 2016 with a ransom of N10m placed on him.
Ortom said at a press conference at Government House, Makurdi, on Friday over 400 people, including herdsmen, had been arrested with over 45 others tried and convicted for violating the anti-open grazing law in the state.
He said his administration would collaborate with the security agencies to ensure the full implementation of the kidnapping and anti-cultism laws to end violence in the state.
Ortom said through the intelligence report made available to him, it was discovered that the violence in Katsina-Ala t and its environs were the handiwork of some criminal elements, stressing that government would do everything possible to arrest them.
The governor said, "As it is now, no farming, business and school activities are going on in Sankera area due to the criminality in the area.
But, government is going to liaise with the security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of crimes in the area are arrested and prosecuted."
The governor said those harbouring kidnappers and cultists would be arrested and prosecuted.
